KidneyDiet Guidelines*

KidneyDiet is provided to help you understand which foods are better for you if you have either Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) or End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Your doctor has probably advised you to watch your intake of potassium, protein, and phosphorus. This app is intended to make it easy for you to quickly determine which foods are a better choice for your particular diet.

If you have ESRD and are undergoing dialysis, your doctor may have recommended a diet with guidelines such as these:

  • Phosphorus (PO4): 1,000 - 1,100 mg/day
  • Potassium (K): 2,000 - 2,500 mg/day
  • Sodium (Na): 1,500 - 2,000 mg/day
  • Protein: High quality protein sources
  • Fluids: No more than 32 Fl.Oz/day

* IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure to check with your doctor and your dietician to determine what your daily intake of nutritional items should be. They will adjust the amount of carbohydrates, proteins, and fat you can eat in one day. On the CKD non-dialysis diet, eating less protein is recommended. With ESRD and a hemodialysis diet, sodium, phosphorus, and potassium will be restricted. A hemodialysis diet will introduce a higher amount of protein into your diet than a CKD non-dialysis diet. High quality protein sources include lean meats, poultry, fish, and egg whites.
